When confronted with such findings- which have been in the works for years, beginning particularly with the work of Jack Wennberg at the University of Vermont and then a Dartmouth ('evidence-based medicine'), in incredibly diverse fields of human inquiry- particularly disturbing in the law and economics these days- I find that most people calm their anxieties and shrug off their responsibility with an answer that invariably runs like this: "After all, when nothing else is certain ( and it is certainty we most anxiously pursue) PLACEBO EFFECTS are STILL worth it!"
